Malcolm Williamson, Photographer

I have had a camera in my hands since the age of 5 and by the time I was 8 given my first movie camera. I started developing negatives into photos in my parents basement by the time I was 12.

Photography, movies, music, art, dance, writing ... all of these were a big part of my life growing up. Born an artist I used my creativity in business but never exploited  my love for the arts and focused instead on buying, starting and building companies.

In 2011 I created Whistler-Films initially to assist other production companies' feature film projects but by 2013 I began writing and developing my own scripts for production.

Whistler-Films Photography is where I use my creativity to  tell stories through a still photo (or series of photos) to make the audience think about what happened in the seconds before that photo was taken and what is going to happen next.

Each shoot is a journey for me as the photographer and for the people I am photographing. Each photograph is individual and unique and a reflection of the personality of the person being photographed or in capturing the essence of the event.

After years of photographing out of my large 1800 sf fully-equipped studio I felt the studio limited my creativity where I became comfortable using the studio space and all its equipment (lighting, backdrops, wardrobe, props and tons of other things that can make things too convenient).

In June 2017 I ended my lease and chose to photograph on location whether indoors or outdoors but always in a real environment.

I have always preferred to shoot on location, choosing natural light over flashes, Fresnels and soft boxes.  I have all the professional equipment to shoot on location in all sorts of conditions.

I have a several DSLR cameras for photography and I shoot video with my DSLR cameras or with my Panasonic cinema camera.

I do photographic and video editing myself as the final step in turning the raw action into photos or video that memorializes the shoot and captures the personality of the people and the setting.

I am located in Ottawa Canada but able to travel for an assignment.
